Livin’ in Sin
Copyright 2006 by Deb Carpenter-Nolting
He had his troubles
and I had mine
Rainbows were just shades of gray
When we found each other
life took on more color
The cowboy and I ran away
Chorus
Now I’m livin’ with him
And livin’ in sin
And livin’ in Cheyenne, Wyoming
We both were tethered
with bridles and fetters
Saddled with baggage and rings
We cut through all traces
Fled to new places
Tumbleweeds finding their wings
Chorus
Bridge
God please forgive us until we’re both free
To live as we love, but ‘til that can be
I’ll be livin’ with him And livin’ in sin
And livin’ in Cheyenne, Wyoming

Let's Make Music

Let’s Make Music
Copyright 1997 by Deb Carpenter-Nolting
Let’s make music
In three-four time
We can play with the melody
We can cling to the rhyme
We can waltz to the slow notes
We can sing every line
So, let’s make music tonight
In three-four time
Slow down the tempo
The night flowers need to bloom
The stars must polish their sparkle
And the beams must catch up with the moon
So, let’s make music
In three-four time
We can play with the melody
We can cling to the rhyme
We can waltz to the slow notes
We can sing every line
So, let’s make music tonight
In three-four time
The light will come on tomorrow
And the rhythm will find the new ray
Love speeds up in the sunshine
Four beats to the measure at day
Oh, let’s make music
In three-four time
We can play with the melody
We can cling to the rhyme
We can waltz to the slow notes
We can sing every line
So, let’s make music tonight
In three-four time

Billy Boy

Billy Boy
Copyright 1995 by Deb Carpenter
When Bill was born in 1915 his daddy toasted his birth
Whooped and hollered, dimed and dollared, bragged on that boy’s worth
He got thrown in for disturbin’ the peace and quiet of the town
When he got out, he ran to the cradle of his sleepin’ son
“Here lies my Billy Boy, a father’s only pride”
“Here lies my Billy Boy,” and then he sighed
“What am I supposed to do
“But go crazy over you?”
“What am I supposed to do but go crazy over…”
“Here lies my Billy Boy, a father’s only pride”
“Here lies my Billy Boy,” and then he cried
The boy took sick in 1918; their only child was dead
His mama took up with other men; Daddy took up the bottle instead
Spent his time in a rockin’ chair that overlooked the grave
Drank his whiskey, talked to himself, and this is what he said
“Here lies my Billy Boy, a father’s only pride”
“Here lies my Billy Boy,” and then he sighed and he cried
“What am I supposed to do
“But go crazy over you?”
“What am I supposed to do but go crazy over…”
“Here lies my Billy Boy, a father’s only pride”
“Here lies my Billy Boy,” and then he cried

Devil's Tongue

The Devil’s Tongue
Copyright 1996 by Deb Carpenter-Nolting
He saunters into the Paradise Lounge
Out of the heavy night air
Snakeskin boots, vaquero roots
Thirsty from here to there
He moistens his lips on her fingertips
Invites himself to sit down
“I’d like a whiskey bracer with you as a chaser,”
He smiles as he orders a round
She can taste the sin as it slithers in
And coils itself up tight
She’s playin’ with fire, nine tails on a wire
Ready to rattle and strike
He’ll sizzle and crackle, and howl like a jackal
Then catch her soul in his teeth
She’s askin’ for trouble, the temperatures double
When the devil’s tongue is unleashed
She follows him out of the Paradise Lounge
A hot Nevada Eve
Tequila and lime, skirt slit to the thigh
Black Velvet, smooth to the cheek
She moistens his lips and swivels her hips
Like a dancing senorita
Licks the sweat off his skin like the salt off the rim
Of her second margarita
He can taste the sin as it slithers in
And coils itself up tight
He’s playin’ with fire, nine tails on a wire
Ready to rattle and strike
She’ll sizzle and crackle, and howl like a jackal
Then catch his soul in her teeth
He’s askin’ for trouble, the temperatures double
When the devil’s tongue is unleashed
Oh, they’re askin’ for trouble, and the temperatures double
When the devil’s tongue is unleashed

You’d Think I’d Get Over You
Copyright 1996 by Billy Joe Cummings and Deb Carpenter
I stopped by an old friend’s house today
And he just happen to mention your name
It almost broke my heart, had to wipe my eyes
I almost broke down and cried
You’d think I’d get over you
You’d think I’d leave our love behind
You’d think I’d move along, you’d think that I’d go on
God knows that I’ve tried and I’ve tried
Oh, you’d think I’d get over you
I picked up an old picture of us
And I saw your smiling face
The laughter we shared
The sound that I still hear
And the thought was followed by a tear
You’d think I’d get over you
You’d think I’d leave our love behind
You’d think I’d move along, you’d think that I’d go on
God knows that I’ve tried and I’ve tried
Oh, you’d think I’d get over you
Bridge
A tear came down and my heart made a sound
Of crystal falling to the ground
You’d think I’d get over you
You’d think I’d get over you
You’d think I’d get over you
You’d think I’d get over you

Rockalullabye (Sing Me to Sleep)
Copyright 1997 by Deb Carpenter
I woke up this mornin’ and you were gone
I watched the sun pass over and thought, “Could I be wrong?”
I know that you’ll come back to me once the sun has gone away
I need to hear your sweet voice at the end of my day
Chorus
Sing me to sleep
Tune the night sky
And cradle me in the rhythm
Of your rockalullabye
Tomorrow when you’re gone again I’ll watch the sun come up
Then I’ll wait for it to travel and hope that you will follow
Time will only tell if you’ll serenade me one more time
Take me in your arms and teach me your rhymes
Chorus
Bridge
Spin the words to catch my dreams with your music
Then you can croon the whole night with me
Chorus

Welcome to the North Star Motel
Copyright 1991 by Deb Carpenter
He told me he had something he’d like to share with me
He took me in the pasture beneath a cedar tree
He told me he couldn’t buy me a ring, but I had a diamond in the sky
And we shared our love as we watched the moon rise high
And he told me, “Welcome to the North Star Motel
“The stars are all in place and all is well
“As long as we can see that your diamond’s in the sky
“You’ll know my love for you will never die.”
He built me a cabin where we could watch the sun set
After seven years of loving me, he drew his final breath
He’d proved his love again and again, he’d proved he was a man of worth
And when I buried the love of my life, I faced his grave to the north
And I whispered, “Welcome to the North Star Motel
“The stars are all in place and all is well
“As long as we can see that my diamond’s in the sky
“I know your love for me will never die.”
Repeat
“I know your love for me will never die”

Mi Corazón

Mi Corazon
Derived from Badger Clark’s “Border Affair”
Copyright 1998 by Deb Carpenter
Spanish is the loving tongue; full of heart, its passion sings
Taught my language to someone who claimed love knew no boundaries
I listened to his phrases broken; believed him when those words were spoken
Heard the sounds, they were my own. “Mi amor, mi Corazon.”
Nights I knew where he would ride. I would listen for his spurs
Fling each door open wide; speak my heart in Spanish terms
And he’d repeat each phrase I taught him; with a kiss, I’d then reward him
And whisper soft, for him alone, “Mi amor, mi Corazon.”
But one time he had to ride for a foolish gamblin’ fight
And we said a swift goodbye in that black and fateful night
And my tears fell to the river that separates us now, forever
I guess that love, indeed, has bounds….. Adios, mi corazon

Come, Take My Hand
Copyright 1994 by Deb Carpenter-Nolting
I got caught in a blizzard, it was getting’ close to night
I said my prayers, wished for a little light
Must have dozed for an instant, when I drifted off course
I dreamed of a cowboy on a white horse
He said, “Come, take my hand
Let’s dance a few rounds
It’s a clear Crystal Ball
With the snow comin’ down.”
He said, “Come, take my hand
Let’s dance a few rounds
It’s a clear Crystal Ball
With the snow comin’ down.”
Though his fingers were icy, his touch was so light
His eyes entranced me, and I was held tight
We whirled and we twirled and his lips found mine
Then I knew that this cowboy was mine for all time
He said, “Come, take my hand
Let’s dance a few rounds
It’s a clear Crystal Ball
With the snow comin’ down.”
Instrumental
The next day they found me in that lovely, lonely place
With my soul on my sleeve, frozen smile on my face
The old timers said that I hadn’t stood a chance
For that charming fellow, Death, had the last dance
He said, “Come, take my hand
Let’s dance a few rounds
It’s a clear Crystal ball
With the snow comin’ down.”
He said, “Come, take my hand
Let’s dance a few rounds
It’s a clear Crystal Ball
With the snow comin’ down.”

I Miss You Already
Copyright 1991 by Deb Carpenter
The dance hall was crowded on Saturday night
When he walked through the door and brushed past my side
He asked me to dance, and he held me so tight
And he whispered to me that this felt so right
He said, “I love you already, and I don’t know your name
“But I know that I’d like to put in a claim
“To have and to hold you ‘til the end of the song
“I miss you already, and you’re not even gone.”
He twirled me around, as if we floated on air
He drew me even closer and his lips touched my hair
He promised a good time and it sounded so grand
But as our fingers entwined I felt the ring on his hand
He said, “I thought that you knew that this is just a dance
“You know I still want you, so give me a chance
“To have and to hold you ‘til the end of the song
“I miss you already, and you’re not even gone.”
The stars hung in silence as we left that dark room
I looked in his blue eyes and the question came soon
He asked me to dance, and he held me so tight
And he whispered to me that this felt so right
I said, “I miss you already, and I will for a time
“But this ring on your hand says you’ll never be mine.
“I’ll just have you and hold you ‘til the end of the song
“And I miss you already, and you’re not even gone.”

Campfire Love
Copyright 1981 Deb Carpenter
Revised 1993
Revised 2008 Deb Carpenter-Nolting and Tim Nolting
As dusk begins to come around
And sun is slowly settin’ down
The fire starts to draw me to its light
I start to think of lovin’ you
Wanting to be close to you
And wrap the folds of darkness ‘round us tight
Oh, come and share this fire with me tonight
The yellow flames, they dance and glow
With lovers’ rhythms soft and low
The cracklin’ fire sings a song for two
With notes in perfect harmony,
We share a burning melody
We feed the coals and spark the flames anew
Oh let me sing this fire’s song with you
‘Cause, Babe, I’m here and I love you
I promise to stay and always be true
Oh, help me keep this flame of love alive
I see the passion in your eyes
Stars that dance in velvet skies
I’ll hold you close and keep you warm tonight
Oh, stay with me and stir this fire inside
Then the fire’s intense heat
Reminds me of when our lips meet
Oh, come over here and sit down next to me
The smoldering of the coals
Is like the joining of our souls
Igniting fiery blazes gold and red
Oh, come and bank this campfire’s tender bed
Chorus

Carry Me Close to Your Heart
Copyright 2006 by Deb Carpenter-Nolting and Tim Nolting
He was leavin’ early on the next cattle drive
He’d be gone a year and she’d not be by his side
Before he stepped into the saddle, she cried out his name
She handed him a gold watch, and these words were engraved
Carry me close to your heart
Time will tell how long we’re apart
Instead of months or days I will count the hours that pass
Embrace me now and hold these seconds fast
Carry me close to your heart
Carry me close to your heart
He’d been gone a season, and she made her own way
She sang and danced in dance halls for the money that it paid
She never loved another; she yearned for him each day
And when she lit her lamp at night, she softly called his name
Carry me close to your heart
The nights will mark how long we’re apart
And when I light this fire know that my love’s still aflame
Return to me and bring me warmth again
Carry me close to your heart
Carry me close to your heart
She was singing heartache songs, when he walked in the room
She saw a timepiece open, heard its softly chiming tune
Before she finished singing, her brown eyes held his gaze
She sang a final chorus to end his wandering days
Carry me close to your heart
Hold the notes and promise not to part
Without you there’s no music, no rhythm and no rhyme
Embrace me now and hold me for all time
Carry me close to your heart
Carry me close to your heart
Carry me close to your heart
Carry me close to your heart
